Alan has had a career-long interest in Local Authority legal services, business law, and family trusts. Alan commenced practice in Dunedin in 1969. He practiced in Invercargill before establishing a practice in Queenstown in 1975. This subsequently became the firm of Macalister Todd Phillips.

Alan is now a consultant and a Notary Public.
