On the 18th December 2018, the Government announced proposals relating to significant changes to employer-assisted temporary work visas, including:

  • Essential Skills Visa
  • Approval-in-Principle
  • Work to Residence Visas including:
  • Talent (Accredited Employer) Visa
  • Long Term Skill Shortage List Occupation Visa
  • Silver Fern Visas including:
  • Practical Experience
  • Job Search

Key Changes

Essentially, the new framework aims to simplify the system by reducing the number of application pathways into one enhanced framework. The new proposed framework will be employer-led rather than migrant-led and will require more administration for employers than is currently required. However, once the changes come into effect, the government anticipates that the whole employer-assisted work visa application process will be faster for employers who meet the required standards. The new framework will require that all employers become accredited (either standard accreditation, labour hire company accreditation or premium accreditation – depending on how many migrant employees you hire and in what industry).

In relation to the Talent (Accredited Employer) Visa, it is also anticipated that the current minimum salary threshold ($55,000) will increase.

The changes are likely to take effect from August 2019.
