Claim for Refugee or Protection Status
If you fear returning to your own country, you can ask Immigration New Zealand (“INZ”) to review a claim for refugee or protection status as an asylum seeker. INZ will not deport anyone whilst their claim is being processed.
There is a specific INZ Branch that deals with refugee or protection status claims: Refugee Status Branch (email: [email protected]).
If you are wishing to make a claim as an asylum seeker, you must complete a confirmation of claim form as well as any identity documents you have (passport or driver’s licence) and submit these to the Refugee Status Branch.
If you wish to instruct us to help you with your claim, we can discuss with you whether you are eligible for Legal Aid Service (financial support where you can’t afford legal representation). We offer legal-aid representation.
For further information about this claims process, please see the INZ website.
We are here to:
o Discuss whether you are eligible to make a claim for refugee or protection status.
o Determine whether you are eligible for Legal Aid Service.
o Assist you with the preparation and submission of your claim.
o Liaise directly with INZ (specifically, the Refugee Status Branch) on your behalf.
o Listen and care. For us, this is an integral part of the process.
